IN GRAMMAR CLASS
Blended learning, also known as hybrid learning, is an approach to education that combines online educational materials and opportunities for interaction online with traditional place-based classroom methods. The effect of blended learning to the students' achievement in grammar class is an article written by Arina Isti'anah. as we can see the article is discuss about the effect of using blended learning for student in grammar class. the article said that Blended learning is believed to improve students’ understanding in learning second language. Nowadays, the use of blended learning is quite popular, especially in language learning and teaching methodology, based on the article that has been mentioned above, there are two approaches in blended learning which “program overflow model” and “core-and-spoke model”. In the first approach, the teacher designs curriculum by integrating some media in the scheduled syllabus. Each step or discussion is the follow-up of the previous discussion. To measure the whole learning, a task or test is given in the end of topic discussion. In the second approach, the instructor gives online class or web-based source. Usually, the instructor gives particular activities such as delivering materials, interactivity, learning sources, and material assessment. In this approach a task or test may be given, yet not necessarily to be scheduled in the syllabus.
The article presents how blended learning was applied in an English grammar class and whether it significantly improved students’ achievement after the treatment. There were 26 students of the the second semester students of the English Letters Department, Sanata Dharma University, involved as a participants in the article. A pre-experimental research was conducted by comparing the means of the participants’ scores in both pre-test and post-test. The article find that blended learning was effective to assist the students to learn English grammar, tudents’ reflective journals also revealed that blended learning was able to improve their understanding and interest in learning English grammar.
If we look at the article, we can see that blended learning is suitable to implement in courses related to language skills, particularly grammar. The regular activities given online are proven to help the students exercise their understanding of the given materials, seen from the results in both pre-test and post-test. There is also consistency between the students’ achievement in the post-test with the students’ completion of the online assignments. However, using blended learning or face-to-face learning methods is still give a positive effect, as long as the goals and the implementation are right, the result will be achieved as we wanted.
